I make five gallons of this every year for our big summer party; it’s a real winner! Start the day before for best flavor.

  • 1 gallon/4 liters cheap red wine (I like Carlo Rossi Burgundy)
  • 1/4 cup cheap brandy
  • 1 orange
  • 2 lemons
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • some amount of flavorless sparkling water or club soda

Measure the brandy and sugar into your container (see below).
Add some red wine and mix til the sugar is pretty much dissolved.
Add the rest of the wine.
Juice one lemon and add the juice.
Peel the orange (I like to spiral peel it) and add the peel.
Juice the flayed orange and add the juice.
Slice the last lemon and add the slices.
Refrigerate overnight.
Just before serving, add some sparkling water to taste.

I make (as I said) five gallons of this stuff at a time, and I used to make it in a five gallon jug, and decant it into pitchers all day for serving. This worked but was a serious pain, plus it’s hard to thoroughly chill. Now I buy four gallons of wine, and quadruple all the other ingredients. I get five single-gallon/3.5 liter bottles of water and use the water in other ways, then make the sangria in the empty bottles. Easy to mix, easy to refrigerate, and you can just throw the bottles in the coolers with the other drinks.
